PORT ADELAIDE SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Welcome to Port Adelaide

A tiny part of our Port Adelaide history:

  • We had the first TAFE student who later got Mayor of The Port.
  • We had a captain who become Premier of South Australia.

Ask Sue from ASSP Gallery Port Adelaide (recommended by Tripadvisor, SATIC trusted tourism business) to take you on a tour through the historic heart of our “Port”, hear the stories to buildings, people and our ghosts.

We have the most museums than any other site in Australia, three are located in the same street:

We have also the AustBuilt Maritime Museum was Australia’s First Maritime Museum and has a wonderful collection of maritime and shipping artefacts, memorabilia and models, and is located in Peterhead South Australia, a few minutes from Port Adelaide. The museum celebrates Port Adelaide’s rich maritime history, and is based on the personal collection of former merchant sailor Keith Le Leu (1926-2006) and was handed over to Port Adelaide Historical Society before his death.

Home at ‘The Port’ is also the worlds oldest existing wooden Clipper Ship ‘City of Adelaide’, she was brought home after a 14-year campaign by the ”City of Adelaide Preservation Trust” which was successful in its bid to return the historic 1864 clipper from Scotland to Port Adelaide. It’s said that at least one third of our SA population arrived on her.
Ample parking at Wauwa Street close to the ship

Lots of history to see is also at the Quarantine Station on Torrens Island. The station was built in 1879 to stop passengers bringing diseases such as small pox into Adelaide. Today, the site is remarkably intact and evokes the experiences of passengers placed in quarantine from the 1880 to the 1950s. Most of the buildings on the site date from 1912 to 1916 but parts of the original 19th century station remain. (Tours available but quick booked out.)

We have our Tall Ships so as the One and All, Falie, Nelcebee and the historic steam tugs Yelta and Fearless.

We have in our Port River a population of up to 60 bottle nose dolphins, sometimes whales, rarely shark sightings. Go kayaking with the dolphins, go on a dolphin cruise on the ‘Port Princess’ or the ‘Dolphin Explorer’ or buy on Sundays a ticket for cruising the Port River on the ‘Yelta”, have a glimpse to the naval defense builder ASC (destroyers, submarines), the Torrens Island Quarantine Station, the Mangroves, our bird life (bird sanctuary).

See the big cruise ships docking, the fishing boats, visit the yacht and sailing clubs (good food there too), the Forts, the Largs Pier Hotel where Jimmy Barnes started his carrier and so many of our other big musicians visited: During the 70s and 80s the hotel began to establish its reputation as an important Aussie Music icon. Jimmy Barnes with Cold Chisel, AC/DC, The Little River Band and The Angels all played here during the early days of their careers. Bon Scott, who later became the lead singer of AC/DC, even met his wife at the Largs Pier Hotel after a gig in 1971..

There is too much to see and to do at the Port that it’s worth a longer stay in one of our hotels so as the Quest Apartments at the foot of the historic Birkenhead Bridge opposite the historic ‘British Hotel’ pub by the historic Hart’s Mill and the Trubridge, the Backpackers Hostel, the soon open holiday apartments at Port Adelaide’s oldest building the Port Admiral Hotel, the Caravan Parks, etc. (ask us for a list).
